The Politics of Critical Discourse

The Politics of Critical Discourse'In this paper I want to examine the structures and influences that support a distinctive class of players in our society: players who have created space for themselves in our daily life,' wrote the late J. David Ciccariello-Maher, author of his best-selling book, 'In Trump We Trust.' While examining these players can help us understand our current predicament, it is also important to acknowledge their individual histories, which are varied, including hip hop, rap, punk, skateboarding, hip-hop, indie, and other forms of culture. The analysis is also a study of the impact of Critical Discourses, the dominant subjectivity. Critical Discourses are the processes through which people create both their private identities and their personal discourses, including language, value, images, symbols, values, beliefs, and even values as they relate to identity. How is one defined as a Critical Discourse? Critical Discourse theorists will argue for the value of the discursive author as the critical mechanism for creating power.Critical Discourses, the dominant process of socialization, creates a necessity for individuals to engage in the production of power. In addition, Critical Discourses and power are interrelated, creating a situation where individuals are struggling to generate more power in their day-to-day lives. The creative process of Critical Discourses is a collective act that results in one creating power within a given discourse. The Critical Discourse, the object of the analysis, is a shared definition that becomes the defining characteristic of the user. This process creates a demand for power to be directed to enact desired outcomes.Political power is produced by the ability to engage the public and generate social agreement, and thus is a real force within society. However, this ability to engage the public is not necessary to hold power in a society. Power is created by the demand for it and the willingness of the people to g o to the point of sacrificing themselves to sustain power. The process of Critical Discourses creates a need for power that can only be created by someone, or something, who is willing to take risks to achieve power. The Critical Discourse creates the determination of what is desired, and it can demand that we take risks in order to attain it.The demand for power is a matter of social support. The idea of Critical Discourse-as a social a need for social support in order to create power, as people identify with the discursive artist. There is nothing wrong with being a Critical Discourse artist, and anything that causes a social audience to identify with a socially controversial artist is a benefit, but it is important to remember that Critical Discourse in itself does not produce power. It is through the introduction of new social movements that power can be created. In this way, the power of the Critical Discourse cannot be identified with a single actor, because power exists as a se ries of social movements-which must be ongoing.

Ap Biology Photosynthetic Organism Free Response Essays

Ap Biology Photosynthetic Organism Free Response Essays Ap Biology Photosynthetic Organism Free Response Essay Ap Biology Photosynthetic Organism Free Response Essay The rate of photosynthesis may vary with changes that occur in environmental temperature, wavelength of light, and light intensity. Using a photosynthetic organism of your choice, choose only ONE of the three variables (temperature, wavelength of light, or light intensity) and for this variable. Design a scientific experiment to determine the effect of the variable on the rate of photosynthesis for the organism Explain how you would measure the rate of photosynthesis in your experiment Describe the results you would expect. Explain why you would expect these results. The rate of photosynthesis is affected by environmental factors like light intensity, light wavelength, and temperature. This experiment will test the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis in a plant called Elodea. Elodea is an easy plant to use for this experiment because it is cheap, abundant, and easy to take care of. This photosynthetic organism needs to be kept in an aerated freshwater tank. To do this experiment, put the Elodea in a beaker of freshwater. Anchor the Elodea using a small weight like a paperclip so that the plant remains in the same position and up right through the entire experiment. Place the beaker of water containing the Elodea in front of a light bulb. In between the beaker and the light bulb, there should be a separate beaker of water that is used to absorb any heat produced by the light. This way the experiment will not be affected by another environmental factor, temperature. Every thirty seconds for five minutes, count the number of bubbles given off by the Elodea. After the first five minutes, move the beaker containing the Elodea about ten centimeters back and let it stand for two minutes so that it can adjust to the new intensity of the light. Count the bubbles released every thirty seconds for five minutes. Move the Elodea back ten more centimeters, let it adjust for two more minutes, then count the number of bubbles released again every thirty seconds for five more minutes. The same piece of Elodea must be used throughout the experiment in order to eliminate any natural reasons why one piece might photosynthesize faster than another (for example, one piece might have more leaves to enhance the amount of light absorbed at a time). The rate of photosynthesis can be determined different ways. Because oxygen is a product of photosynthesis and the Elodea plant is submerged in water, the oxygen is released in bubbles that rise to the surface of the water in the beaker. In this experiment, the rate of photosynthesis for each degree of light intensity can be measured by counting the number of bubbles released every 30 seconds for five minutes at each distance. The rate is the number of bubbles released per minute. Organisms that use the process of photosynthesis to create sugar to use for energy have a greater rate of photosynthesis when the intensity of the light source is the greatest. If light is far away from the leaves of a plant, for example, then it takes more time for the light to be absorbed and used in photosynthesis. When it takes more time for the light to reach the leaves, the rate of photosynthesis decreases. As the light intensity increases, I would expect the rate of photosynthesis to increase as well. Therefore, I would expect that when the Elodea is closest to the light bulb, the rate of photosynthesis would be the greatest. My hypothesis would be: If light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis, and the rate of photosynthesis is measured using the amount of oxygen given off by Elodea with a light bulbs placed at different distances, then the rate of photosynthesis in Elodea will be greatest when the intensity of the light bulb is greatest.

Formal vs. Informal English (Why and When Grammar Matters)

Formal vs. Informal English (Why and When Grammar Matters) Formal vs. Informal English (Why and When Grammar Matters) Lately, there’s been a lot of debate about whether correcting people’s grammar makes you a snob (or, in the words of one commentator, â€Å"patronizing, pretentious and just plain wrong†). As proofreaders, this puts us in a difficult position: On the one hand, we don’t want to be â€Å"patronizing, pretentious and just plain wrong.† On the other hand, we’re basically professional pedants, using our knowledge of English to help people communicate. Please dont call us grammar Nazis, by the way. Were very much against fascism, even the grammatical kind. Perhaps the real question is when it’s appropriate to insist on particular grammatical standards. First, though, we should consider the difference between formal and informal English. Formal English Formal English sticks to the prescribed rules of spelling and grammar. This is far more common in writing than speech, especially academic writing and in professional settings. In this kind of English, it’s typical to: Use conventional grammar and spelling Avoid contractions (e.g., â€Å"don’t† or â€Å"should’ve†) and slang Use academic or technical language Always use complete sentences, as well as longer or more complex sentences Require consistent use of terminology/punctuation This kind of writing can seem â€Å"snobby,† especially if the author uses very obscure words or complicated sentences. But a good writer will use formal English to ensure clarity and precision. The advantage of formal English is that it helps people in a particular field or subject area to communicate by providing a standard style of writing. This is why colleges use academic English, but being able to use formal language is valuable elsewhere, too. The important thing is knowing when to use formal English: e.g. at work, in college papers, when communicating with authority figures, etc. Its also useful for talking with the Queen of England. Admittedly, this isnt a daily issue for most people. Informal English Informal English essentially refers to forms of written or spoken English that don’t stick closely to conventional spelling and grammar or that use a lot of slang and informal words. This is the kind of everyday language we use when talking with friends or emailing someone we know well. There is, obviously enough, no standard form of informal English, since it simply refers to non-standard English, which can even encompass â€Å"txtspk†! Theres no such thing as formal txtspk. So far. Does Grammar Really Matter? When using formal English, yes, grammar and spelling are important. It’s not that formal English is inherently â€Å"better† regardless of the circumstances; it’s simply that using formal English in professional or academic settings aids communication and clarity. By comparison, mistakes like mixing up â€Å"their† and â€Å"they’re† in a college paper could imply a lack of care or attention, even if the reader can tell what you intended. However, if you’re just hanging out with friends and you feel an urge to tell someone off for splitting an infinitive, it could seem insulting or annoying to the person you’re correcting. Thus, if grammar matters more to you than your friends, feel free to be as pedantic as you like. Otherwise, it might be best to save formal English for when it really counts. If you already carry a red pen for correcting mistakes wherever you go, you might want to try a career in proofreading.

Three Information Technology Systems Assignment

Three Information Technology Systems - Assignment Example Being able to correlate information across multiple platforms creates a successful environment for combatting crime. Introduction In today’s age of information technology and in the various designs of database creations, members of law enforcement find that knowing how to utilize any number of research techniques will greatly assist in finding information on criminals being sought for various crimes. Criminal databases are also a valuable tool in determining what areas of a city, state or in the nation, require a more robust police presence in order to keep criminal activity down to a manageable level (Hunter & Barker 2011). As part of training for any police officer and for detectives conducting any type of criminal research activities, understanding how each database works and the search criteria required for each, is essential for success in finding and identifying specific people who may be involved in criminal behavior. Three database systems are discussed in this paper: the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), the National Crime Victimization Survey database (NCVS), and the Crime Mapping system (Cordner & Scarborough 2010). 1. There are a number of ways that these database systems are used by law enforcement agencies within a community policing program to help with keeping down criminal activity. It is important for every community to have some type of mapping system which can show what criminal activity has been taking place over various time periods. In many instances, the police department for any given city will most likely access state information in order to drill down to a city’s information criteria and subsequently, to fine-tune that information to a neighborhood or community (Mazerolle, Bellucci & Gajewski 2005). The state is the main point of access for any type of information concerning census data, land use data, Department of Motor Vehicles data, and any other data that would commonly be required by a state to maintain in some database. From the statewide access point, the city police department may choose to have a professional database designer come in to create a system that can access the state information and combine it with city information in order to be able to create specific pictures or maps of where crime has been more active, such as in number of robberies over a specified time period. This type of mapping is also useful in determining traffic problems that might occur in various spots in the community because of criteria concerning time of day and even the day of the week (Mazerolle, Bellucci & Gajewski 2005). In the case of the IAFIS system which plugs into a national database, the use of the system helps to identify criminals who may be traveling over different cities and even into different states while committing crimes along the way (FBI 20130. If a criminal has been picked up once along the way and been fingerprinted before being put in jail, when he gets out and commits more crimes, he is easily identified, apprehended and put back in jail. While some criminals have not been caught yet, their fingerprints at crime scenes will be retained and attached to the crime so that if ever apprehended, the crime will come up in the database and the criminal finally

Edit research paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 7500 words

Edit research paper - Essay Example Over the years, the country has established its supremacy in the global oil market. For the past decade, a mean yield of 10.26 million barrels per day has been produced by the country. Figure 1 shows that this is 12% of the total world supply. In 2011, the oil-based economy generated 11.8 million barrels per day, raising their production share to 13%. The world Saudi Arabia is followed by Russia, United States of America, and China with shares of 12%, 12% and 5% respectively (See Appendix Table A). The domestic production of the country grew by a yearly average of 3.6% from 1991 to 2011.This growth is helpful for the country’s export market and profitability making it beneficial for the overall development of the economy (Yizraeli, 2000). In terms of exports, Saudi Arabia also led the industry in 2009 with 8.2 million barrels a day. The country has captured 12.4% of the total world exports during the year. Russia placed second with 5.2 million followed by Iran with 2.8 billion. 20% of the country’s exports go to the United States of America. Japan and South Korea also imports significant portions of Saudi’s supply (US Energy Information Administration, 2010). On the other hand, despite the consistent boost in production of oil, the world demand for the commodity has been volatile. Figure 2 shows the instability in the world-wide demand for oil, these factors may have been influential to the export performance for crude oil. Figure 2 depicts the demand of the world, US, Japan and South Korea. The latter three mentioned were also included because these are significant importers from Saudi Arabia. The demand for oil has been volatile from the 1990s to early 2000 as reflected from the fluctuations in the graph. Near 2008, downward demand trends are manifested from the world, US, Japan and South Korea. Periodic drops in demand are apparent, and seem to relate to business cycles. During this
